UK Energy Bills Set to Soar with Near Four-Year High Gas Prices
Energy bills in the UK are forecast to reach a three-year high after Cornwall Insight's final estimate for October, which suggests a 4% increase. This means that householders will be facing their highest energy costs since July 2023.
Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), warns that this is not just a short-term issue but a long-term concern due to the UK's continued exposure to high gas prices. Wholesale gas prices have reached a near four-year high, which will likely cause further price increases.
Ralston points out that the UK's reliance on gas for home heating is a significant problem, as despite the growing demand for electric heat pumps, the country lags behind its European neighbors in reducing gas dependence. The recent increase in renewables production has squeezed gas off the system, lowering wholesale power prices by a third last year.
However, Ralston notes that unless there is further reduction in gas reliance, householders will be at the mercy of geopolitics and actors like Putin and Trump who control the global gas market.
