The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical waterways in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and representing a significant pressure point in global energy infrastructure. Approximately 17 to 21 million barrels per day transit through this narrow channel, accounting for nearly one-fifth of global oil supply and a substantial proportion of liquefied natural gas exports.
The primary exporters dependent on uninterrupted Hormuz access include Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Iran, and Qatar. Qatar's exposure is particularly acute given its LNG supply corridor runs through the same channel, making any disruption a simultaneous crude oil and natural gas shock.
A blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would have significant implications for global oil prices. The first and fastest channel through which this affects oil prices operates through futures markets, where institutional traders repriced anticipated scarcity before tankers even stopped moving. Lower liquidity in ICE Brent futures has amplified price swings, leading to single-session moves of around 9.5% during escalation events.
The secondary cascade includes refined products and LNG, with crude price shocks transmitting into diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel markets within days. Diesel is frequently the most exposed refined product in supply disruption scenarios due to its backbone role in freight, logistics, and industrial activity. Qatar's reliance on Hormuz for LNG exports adds a second layer of complexity unique to this chokepoint.
Hedge fund and money manager positioning in derivatives markets provides one of the most useful real-time gauges of institutional sentiment during geopolitical crises. Net long positions held by money managers in ICE Brent futures and options had rebounded to the equivalent of more than 192 million barrels, a two-month high, following a significant sell-off triggered by the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding.
