Hormuz Crisis Erodes US Emergency Energy Buffer

Record diesel prices and falling US strategic reserves have eroded America's emergency energy buffer, according to recent data. The crisis caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has moved beyond oil prices, affecting refined products and US energy security.

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve inventories have fallen to 298.7 million barrels, their lowest level in four decades. More than 6 million barrels were drawn from the reserve in the latest reported week, reducing part of America's capacity to respond to future crises.

The refined-products-to-crude spread has widened to around $100 a barrel, signaling that the problem is not just a shortage of oil but a disruption across the supply chain. Diesel prices are particularly critical, as they can increase transportation costs and add to inflationary pressures.
