Hormuz Crisis Threatens Delay to QatarEnergy's LNG Expansion Plans
QatarEnergy's expansion plans for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) may be delayed due to the ongoing crisis around the Strait of Hormuz, according to CEO and Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad al-Kaabi. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, Al-Kaabi stated that critical equipment needed for expansion projects is being prevented from reaching Qatar.
The disruption is affecting the delivery of equipment required for additional LNG trains under the expansion program, which aims to increase capacity to 142 million tons per year by scaling national production. The crisis could also impact the commissioning timelines for North Field East, which targets a 42.9% capacity increase to 110 million tons per year across four trains.
Al-Kaabi emphasized that the duration of the Hormuz shipping restrictions will dictate the extent of the delays, with prolonged disruption jeopardizing the commissioning timelines across all three major phases: North Field East, North Field South, and North Field West. The first North Field East (NFE) train is scheduled to begin production in 2027, while the North Field South (NFS) remains set for 2028.
