Hormuz Crisis Threatens QatarEnergy LNG Expansion Timelines
QatarEnergy's plans to increase Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production capacity are at risk due to shipping disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. The company's CEO, Saad al-Kaabi, warned that the ongoing disruption could delay several major LNG expansion projects as critical equipment shipments struggle to reach Qatar.
The potential delays add uncertainty to QatarEnergy's ambitious plans to significantly increase LNG production capacity over the coming years. The first major phase of the North Field expansion program, North Field East (NFE), is designed to increase Qatar's LNG production capacity by 42.9% to 110 million tons per year through four new LNG trains. The first NFE train is expected to begin production in 2027.
The subsequent North Field South (NFS) expansion is scheduled to come online in 2028, and QatarEnergy also has longer-term plans for North Field West (NFW). A prolonged disruption could push back construction, commissioning, and startup schedules for additional LNG trains under QatarEnergy's multi-stage North Field expansion program.
