Hormuz Deal Talks Send Oil Prices Soaring
Oil prices surged after reports emerged of US and Iranian negotiators discussing a phased deal tied to the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow shipping route is crucial for seaborne oil, and even talk of changing access can quickly move prices.
The Reuters report stated that talks in New York are exploring a phased arrangement where Iran would reopen the route in exchange for Washington easing sanctions. As a result, front-month WTI rose 2.5% to $94.47 a barrel, while Brent gained 2.7% to $105.90.
However, the same news cycle also highlighted the fragility of the region. An Iranian military official warned that conflict could widen if Iran is attacked again, and there were fresh reports of Houthi-linked attacks on Saudi Arabia. This has led to a bigger short-term 'risk premium' in crude futures.
