Hormuz Dispute Sends Oil Prices Higher
Oil prices rose over 1% on Monday as tensions between Iran and the US continued to escalate over the Strait of Hormuz. According to a proposal from Iran, the strait would reopen within seven days if the US lifts its naval blockade, eases military pressure, removes sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and agrees to a ceasefire.
US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal, but Iran has stated that it remains committed to these conditions. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial shipping route through which about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies are transported.
The disruption in traffic has led to a sharp reduction in shipping activity, with some Gulf producers seeking alternative ways to move crude. Trump claimed that over 20 million barrels had transited the strait over the weekend, according to an Axios report.
