Hormuz Headlines Send African Oil Prices Soaring

African markets are closely watching several key economic indicators as they close out the week. One major factor is the proposed restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to an increase in oil prices. According to Reuters, Iran and Oman have floated a plan to ban vessels deemed 'hostile' and impose steep fines on rule-breakers.

This development is significant for African assets because higher crude prices can widen the gap between countries that export oil and those that import it. For importers, pricier oil raises the dollar cost of fuel, increasing demand for hard currency and pressuring exchange rates.

Traders told Reuters that they see Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana as broadly stable next week, while Zambia's currency is likely to be weaker. Uganda's currency may also firm up. Local inflation data from Mauritius and Seychelles will also be closely watched, with July inflation numbers expected to be released.

The other key variable at play is local inflation. In Ghana, inflation eased to 4.6% year-on-year in July from 5.3% in June, while Malawi's central bank held its policy rate at 24% to keep disinflation on track.
