Hormuz Oil Spill Reaches Ecological Catastrophe Levels

The Strait of Hormuz oil spill is an environmental crisis unfolding amid the US-Iran war. The ongoing conflict has led to tankers being struck by missiles, set on fire or sunk, causing a significant number of spills in the region.

In June, a Russian tanker carrying approximately 800,000 barrels of oil stranded off the coast of Oman, resulting in a major spill. According to Greenpeace, there were as many as 85 large oil-laden tankers stuck in the Strait at one point, but this number has since dropped to 13.

Since the start of the war, Greenpeace has tracked over 100 spills using satellite imagery. However, it's estimated that there may be several other spills that have gone undetected due to widespread GPS spoofing in the region.
