Hormuz Shipping Surges Amid Tensions: 2K Vessels, 1B Barrels Move Through Waterway
Despite ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, the Strait of Hormuz has seen an unprecedented surge in commercial shipping. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), more than 2000 vessels have been assisted through the waterway over the past six months.
The volume of crude oil transported through the strait during this period is staggering - a whopping 1 billion barrels have moved through it. This is the highest traffic in the region in six months, and it's largely due to coordinated protection efforts by US forces, Gulf partners, insurers, and shipping companies.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said that the main transit lanes have been cleared of mines, allowing thousands of ships to continue using the waterway without interruption. The development is a significant boost to global energy security, as the Strait of Hormuz remains central to the world's oil and gas supplies.
