Hormuz Strait Sees Dramatic Decline in Vessel Traffic Amid Ongoing Gulf Tensions

Tension in the Gulf persists as vessels trickle through the Strait of Hormuz. A total of 17 commodity vessels transited the strait over the weekend, down from 37 a week earlier.

This is significantly lower than before the US-Israeli war with Iran started on February 28, when the strait typically handled about 125 large commercial vessels per day.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial conduit for oil and liquefied natural gas, accounting for a fifth of global exports. Despite the reduced traffic, Middle Eastern producers continue to export oil on tankers with their transponders off.
