Hormuz Tensions Send Brent Crude Past $95 on Growing Middle East Risks

The price of Brent crude oil has surged past $95 per barrel due to escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that carries about one-fifth of the world's oil and petroleum liquids flows.

The recent spike is attributed to the UAE's suspension of trade with Iran following reported missile launches in the Gulf. The US Energy Information Administration noted that disruptions through Hormuz cut access to crude and forced some Middle East production offline, driving Brent prices up to $118 a barrel in April.

This situation poses challenges for the Federal Reserve as it considers monetary policy adjustments. With inflation running above the 2% target for years, Fed officials Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan warned against waiting too long to address rising prices.

The oil price increase also impacts gas prices, with US regular gasoline averaging $4.08 per gallon on August 5. The current Brent rally is expected to continue unless the US and Iran find a route back to talks, allowing for a de-escalation of tensions in the region.
