Natural gas prices in Europe have surged to their highest levels since January 2023 due to escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global energy trade.

The Dutch gas futures benchmark rose by as much as 6.5 percent during early trading on Wednesday before trimming some of its gains, according to Bloomberg News data.

European gas prices are currently more than 70 percent higher compared to levels at the beginning of July, when a temporary ceasefire fueled hopes of a resolution to the war between the United States and Iran.

Europe faces a crucial month before winter, with gas storage facilities in the region only about 65 percent full, the lowest seasonal level recorded since data became available in 2009.
