Hormuz Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring for Fourth Consecutive Day
Oil prices continued their upward trend for a fourth consecutive day as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remained high amid the ongoing US-Iran standoff. The uncertainty has kept traders on edge, with crude flows through the strait closely monitored.
According to Bloomberg, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude traded above $84 a barrel on August 19. Brent crude closed near $92 a barrel a day earlier, a testament to the ongoing supply concerns.
US President Donald Trump stated that 'a lot of oil' is still moving through the waterway, but visible vessel traffic remains far below normal levels due to attacks and mine-laying incidents. To mitigate these disruptions, Persian Gulf oil producers have taken measures such as keeping ship locations private.
The recent establishment of a transit corridor in the Strait of Hormuz by the US military has also provided some relief to shipping activities.
In addition to the geopolitical factors, the UAE's decision to cut all economic ties with Iran due to alleged ballistic missile attacks has further contributed to the oil price surge. This move is expected to deepen Iran's economic isolation.
