Houthi Advance Exposes Saudi Arabia's Oil Route Vulnerabilities
The rapid advance of Houthi forces in Yemen has exposed vulnerabilities in Saudi Arabia's military strategy, raising concerns about the kingdom's ability to protect key oil and shipping routes.
The Iran-backed group captured territory and islands overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. This breakthrough was driven by divisions among forces opposed to the Houthis, limited Saudi air support, and what officials described as a failure to recognize the scale of the group's preparations.
A Western diplomat noted that the Houthis had quietly built a force of about 100,000 fighters, which was not detected by Riyadh or other regional powers. Analysts describe this as a major intelligence failure, with Neil Quilliam stating that 'they just weren't picking up the signal.'
