Houthi Attacks Escalate Despite Diplomatic Efforts in Tehran

Iran-backed Houthi forces have claimed responsibility for six attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities, escalating tensions despite recent diplomatic efforts. The attacks targeted key infrastructure across Saudi Arabia, including the Ras Tanura oil refinery, an Aramco facility in Abqaiq, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, the Rabigh oil refinery, and a military headquarters in Najran. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the attacks aimed at vital commercial and military sites, though independent verification of these claims is pending.

The escalation follows a high-level meeting in Tehran this week between Iran and members of the Mecca defence alliance, including Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan. The participants agreed to continue discussions to strengthen regional cooperation and prevent military escalation. However, the Houthi attacks suggest that diplomatic efforts have yet to yield tangible results on the ground.

The Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting two ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis towards Riyadh, with shrapnel injuring one Saudi citizen and damaging property. Earlier, the internationally recognised Yemeni government urged the UN Security Council to take punitive measures against the Houthis for attacks on Aden International Airport.

The recent surge in combat operations underscores the ongoing volatility in the region, despite attempts at de-escalation through dialogue.
