Houthi Leader Threatens Oil Tanker Attacks, Jolts Global Markets
Abdulmalik al-Houthi, the leader of Yemen's Houthi movement, has been exerting significant influence on global oil markets. His group has targeted Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates (UAE) oil facilities in recent years, disrupting production and exports.
In a move that could further destabilize the region, al-Houthi has warned of potential attacks on oil tankers transiting through the Red Sea. This threat comes as tensions between Yemen's Houthis and their Gulf state foes continue to simmer.
The Houthi movement has already demonstrated its capabilities by striking Saudi Aramco's Abqaiq facility in September 2019, knocking out nearly half of the kingdom's oil production for several weeks. The incident sent shockwaves through global markets, with Brent crude prices surging above $70 a barrel.
Al-Houthi's latest warning has sent oil prices higher once again, with some analysts predicting that a sustained disruption to Saudi and UAE exports could push prices beyond $80 a barrel.
