Houthi Missile Attack on Riyadh Sparks US Concern Over Escalating Conflict
US and Saudi Arabia have expressed concern over a rapid escalation in hostilities after Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a ballistic missile attack on Riyadh, marking the first time since the conflict resumed. Loud explosions were heard twice in the city, with one fuel tank bearing the logo of oil giant Aramco on fire near the airport.
The US State Department warned that 'this military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly,' advising American citizens outside the Middle East to reconsider travel to and through the region. The Houthis' lightning offensive has already displaced over 110,000 people and left hundreds dead, according to the UN.
Saudi Arabia responded with scores of airstrikes on Houthi-held areas but failed to stop their advance. The US refused a Saudi request to strike the Houthis last week, despite approving a $24.3 billion sale of F-35 fighter jets to the kingdom to help 'deter current and future threats.'
