Houthi Rebels Launch Attack on Riyadh, Raising Concerns for Global Oil Supplies
Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed to have attacked 'sensitive' sites in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with missiles and drones on Saturday. The attack came hours after flames and a large plume of smoke were seen near King Khalid International Airport.
The Houthis said the operation was a response to an attack in the Yemeni capital Sanaa. They also claimed to have targeted an Aramco facility in Yanbu, a key Saudi oil export hub, on the Red Sea coast.
Saudi Arabia's military coalition fighting the Houthis said its air defenses had destroyed a missile fired toward Riyadh early Saturday morning.
The escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia has raised concerns for global oil supplies and created new threats to shipping in the Red Sea. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan suggested that Saudi Arabia may need military support from Turkey under their trilateral defense pact, which also includes Pakistan.
