Houthi Strikes on Saudi Arabia Wound 73 Civilians Amid Escalating Conflict
The conflict in Yemen between government forces and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels has escalated, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. On September 8, 2026, a ballistic missile strike hit trucks carrying military equipment from Saudi Arabia to the Al-Wadiah military camp in Hadhramaut province, wounding 73 civilians.
The Riyadh-led coalition vowed to respond to the attacks, which come after days of fighting near the Red Sea coast. The Houthis have been trying to capture land bordering the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping artery for Saudi oil exports.
The Houthi rebels accused Riyadh of carrying out strikes around Yemen, including the deadly bombardment of a prison in Al-Hazm that killed 11 people and left 20 inmates missing under the rubble. The conflict has seen the Houthis take over most of Yemen's major population centres, including the capital Sanaa.
