The Houthi movement in Yemen reports that at least 25 people, including women and children, were killed in a Saudi-led airstrike. The attack targeted al-Shariyah, a town east of the capital Sanaa, with live footage from Al Masirah TV showing rescuers recovering bodies from the rubble, including young children. The Houthi-run Saba news agency blamed Saudi Arabia for the strike, which occurred amid renewed fighting in Yemen.
The war in Yemen had been largely dormant but reignited due to the Iran war. Tensions escalated after Saudi Arabia struck Sanaa airport to prevent an Iranian plane from landing, leading to Houthi retaliations against Saudi targets, including airports and oil facilities. Recent clashes have focused on Taiz province, where an attack on a market reportedly killed 30 people, with both sides blaming each other.
The United Nations states that over 1,600 people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced since fighting resumed. The Saudi-led coalition has frequently bombed Houthi positions, while the group has launched multiple missile strikes into Saudi Arabia. Hours before the al-Shariyah strike, the coalition intercepted a missile heading toward Riyadh. Houthi leader Mahdi al-Mashat has vowed revenge for the latest attacks.
