Houthis Claim Blockade Forces Rerouting of Eight Saudi Oil Tankers

Yemen's Houthi group has claimed that eight Saudi oil tankers were forced to reroute from the Bab al-Mandab Strait due to its maritime blockade. According to Yahya Saree, Houthi military spokesperson, this diversion is part of the group's blockade imposed on Saudi Arabian vessels.

The move comes as a response to the recent declaration by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group of a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia on July 20. The blockade has sparked escalating threats to commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Riyadh has vowed to protect maritime traffic and respond to threats against international navigation. This development is part of a broader effort by Saudi Arabia and 13 other countries to create a multinational maritime defense coalition aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation, international trade, and energy supply routes in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

The eight oil tankers were forced to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, a significant detour that will impact their journey time and costs. The Houthi group has been at odds with Saudi Arabia for years, and this latest development highlights the escalating tensions between the two nations.
