Houthis Declare Naval Blockade on Saudi Arabia Amid Escalating Conflict

A recent escalation in clashes between the Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthis has heightened concerns about disruptions to global oil shipping routes. The conflict began on July 25, when the Houthis announced a missile attack on Saudi Arabia, just hours after Saudi forces targeted Houthi positions in response to attacks on Saudi vessels.

The Houthis had declared a 'naval blockade' against Saudi Arabia several days earlier, citing the principle of 'an eye for an eye.' This move was in response to what they called Saudi Arabia's 'blockade' of Yemen over nearly 12 years.

Despite declaring a naval blockade, the Houthis say they do not intend to completely halt ship traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. However, the recent attacks have affected shipping companies, with at least nine ships changing course since the blockade was announced.
