A Saudi civil defense spokesperson confirmed that debris from an intercepted Houthi drone killed one person and injured two others in the western province of Taif, Saudi Arabia. The drone was said to have been launched by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, targeting Saudi shipping and oil facilities.

The incident occurred on September 17, 2026, marking the first civilian casualty since the Houthis increased their attacks against the kingdom. Two other people were injured in the debris, including a Saudi woman and a Pakistani resident who is in critical condition.

The drone attack has escalated tensions regionally, with Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait condemning the Houthi's deadly assault. Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated that 'there is no excuse for attacking' Saudi Arabia, while Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed 'deep concern' over the drone attack.

The leader of the Iran-backed group, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, denounced what he called Saudi Arabia's 'utterly heinous lies,' referring to the claim that the group targeted Mecca. He called for mass protests on Friday in Sanaa and Houthi-controlled areas to show support for protecting holy mosques.
