Houthis Expand Control Along Yemen's Red Sea Coast as US Holds Back Military Support
The Houthi movement has made significant gains in Yemen, capturing key positions along the country's Red Sea coast. The advance has raised concerns about maritime security, particularly through the Bab al-Mandab strait, one of the world's major chokepoints.
US President Donald Trump has condemned the Houthi advance for threatening freedom of navigation, but Washington has opted not to intervene militarily. Instead, the US has engaged in direct contacts with the Houthis, including a confidential meeting in Oman where the group assured Washington that it would not target American or Israeli vessels.
The Houthis have promised to maintain the 2025 ceasefire understanding and not affect international navigation through the Red Sea. However, they have taken control of areas closer to the Bab al-Mandab strait, raising concerns about Saudi ships or those carrying Saudi oil.
