Houthis Strike at Heart of Saudi Oil Trade in Red Sea Escalation
Yemen's Houthi forces have claimed responsibility for targeting Saudi oil infrastructure near the major Red Sea export hub of Yanbu. According to Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson, the operation was a direct retaliation against alleged Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace.
The attack on critical facilities linking eastern Saudi Arabia to Yanbu comes as Saudi Arabia increasingly relies on this route due to rerouting its crude output via its east-west pipeline to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. This move was made in response to Iranian attacks following the outbreak of war between Iran and the U.S. and Israel in February.
The conflict poses a severe threat to global energy markets, with international oil prices surging due to the threat of disrupting a second major global waterway. Last week, Houthis threatened to blockade Saudi Arabia's oil industry in the Red Sea, prompting Saudi Arabia to launch airstrikes on suspected Houthi military facilities in Yemen's Hodeidah port.
