Houthis Strike Saudi Aramco Refinery Amid Escalating Tensions

The Houthi militant group in Yemen launched a strike against Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery, which processes over 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The attack on Sunday caused a fire at the refinery but no casualties were reported.

The Houthis have carried out similar attacks on Aramco facilities before and had shut down the Jazan refinery in late July. Saudi air defenses intercepted several Houthi drones targeting the commercial quay and storage in the port, while two ballistic missiles fell into the sea.

Saudi Arabia recently signed a defense pact with Pakistan and Turkey, but neither of these countries has taken any action in response to the latest attack on Saudi Arabia. The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement aims to enhance cooperation and security among the three Muslim-majority nations amid the ongoing deterioration of the situation in the Middle East.

The agreement has drawn criticism from Iran, which views it as a pointless endeavor that does not provide any real security benefits. With no legal obligation to come to each other's aid, some observers have questioned the effectiveness of the Mecca Agreement in preventing further escalation of the conflict.
