The Houthi rebel group in Yemen has claimed responsibility for targeting sensitive crude oil supply and transport sites linking eastern Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea oil export hub of Yanbu. The operation, announced by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree, was in response to what he described as Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace.

Saudi Arabia has been re-routing its crude output to Yanbu via its east-west pipeline due to Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The re-routing began after the US and Israel launched a war on Iran in February, disrupting global oil supplies.
