Houthis Target Saudi Oil Tankers in Northern Red Sea Amid Blockade Escalation
Houthi rebels in Yemen have vowed to target all Saudi vessels attempting to avoid their ongoing maritime blockade by using alternative routes in the northern Red Sea. The group's military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, announced that they had successfully targeted a Saudi oil tanker called 'Wafa' off the coast of Yanbu with ballistic missiles.
The attack marks the eighth Saudi oil tanker to be hit since the start of the maritime blockade on July 22nd. According to Saree, 29 vessels have been forced to turn around and change course in the Red and Arabian Seas due to the Houthi's efforts.
The Houthi rebels imposed the maritime embargo in response to alleged Saudi efforts to blockade territory controlled by the rebels, with the bombing of Sanaa International Airport in July triggering the escalation. The group has vowed to maintain its operations and escalate targeting Saudi oil tankers in the northern Red Sea to close all access points and prevent passage.
The strategic location of the Houthi's center of power in western Yemen allows them to exert control over the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a crucial oil export route for Riyadh. The Houthis have stated that their actions are based on the premise of 'an eye for an eye' and 'a blockade for a blockade,' indicating no willingness to back down.
