Houthis Tighten Grip on Bab el-Mandeb, Threatening Saudi Oil Exports
The Iran-backed Houthi group has rapidly expanded its control along the Red Sea coast in Yemen, capturing strategic positions and bringing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait under greater influence. This development poses a significant threat to Saudi Arabia's oil exports and shipping routes.
The Houthis began their latest offensive on September 3, forcing government-aligned forces to withdraw from several positions within days. By September 11, they had taken control of Mokha and the island of Perim, while subsequent advances brought the Hanish islands under their control.
The strategic waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, making it a crucial maritime chokepoint for global trade. Saudi authorities have reported drone attacks and interceptions, while the Houthis have claimed strikes against Saudi military targets and accused Saudi forces of conducting extensive airstrikes in Yemen.
