Hungary Targets 2027 End for Russian Gas Imports

Hungary's Minister of Economy and Energy Istvan Kapitany announced that the country aims to end Russian gas imports by October 2027. In an interview with Telex, Kapitany emphasized that existing cross-border infrastructure and alternative supply routes will ensure Hungary's gas supplies without relying on pipeline gas from Russia.

According to Kapitany, Budapest is holding active talks with neighboring countries, including Romania, as well as companies supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG), in search of alternatives to Russian energy resources. He noted that the government was seeking compensation from Brussels for abandoning Russian energy resources, as previously stated by Prime Minister Peter Magyar.

Kapitany cautioned that despite efforts to diversify its energy supplies and reduce dependence on Russian energy, the situation remains difficult to predict. Hungary is examining ways to meet its gas demand through alternative sources, although developments are proceeding as expected, according to Kapitany.
