Hungary Targets End of 2027 for Phasing Out Russian Gas Imports
Hungary's Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitány has stated that the country aims to phase out Russian natural gas imports by the end of 2027. This is in line with European Union plans to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources. The minister noted that Hungary's dependence on Russian gas is not due to a lack of ability to purchase from other sources, but rather because it has been the most economical arrangement until now.
Kapitány emphasized that there are opportunities for breaking free from dependence on Russia in the oil supply sector as well. He mentioned ongoing talks with Croatia regarding the full-capacity operation of the Adria oil pipeline. The country's goal is to secure gas supplies from non-Russian sources by October 2027.
The EU has allocated only one-fifth of the funds needed to overcome its dependence on Russian energy resources, according to a recent report by the European Court of Auditors. Hungary's efforts to reduce its reliance on Russia are part of a broader effort by the EU to phase out Russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas by the end of 2027.
