Hungary Targets End of Russian Gas Dependence by 2027
Hungary is reassessing its energy ties with Russia, and as a result, the country may stop using Russian gas by October 2027. According to Economy Minister István Kapitány, Hungary has sufficient pipeline connections to import gas from alternative sources at competitive prices.
The government is negotiating with suppliers on diversifying oil imports and reviewing plans to expand nuclear power generation. Currently, the country's energy mix includes four existing reactors that are expected to be shut down in 2032 unless their operation can be extended by another 20 years through technological advances.
Hungary's Prime Minister Péter Magyar previously stated that the government aims to diversify energy supply sources as much as possible, which should strengthen the country's energy security and help reduce prices. The review of the Paks nuclear power plant expansion is ongoing and will be completed by the end of 2026.
