Hydro Updates on Alunorte Gas Supply Disruptions and Financial Impact
Norsk Hydro has issued an update on the ongoing natural gas supply issues affecting its Alunorte alumina refinery. In August 2026, the refinery's supplier, CELBA, notified Alunorte of disruptions in natural gas availability. As a result, Alunorte has not received its contracted gas deliveries and is now sourcing gas at spot market prices while pursuing a long-term supply solution.
The company previously reported in mid-August 2026 that the disruptions could lead to a lost alumina production of 100,000 to 120,000 tonnes and a financial impact of USD 75 to 100 million for its Bauxite & Alumina segment in the third quarter. For the fourth quarter, Hydro estimates the cost impact of the difference between contract and spot gas prices to range between USD 90-110 million.
Alunorte does not anticipate further interruptions to its gas supply and is working closely with CELBA and relevant authorities to manage the situation. The financial impact remains uncertain due to fluctuating gas prices, contractual developments, and the progress of securing a long-term supply solution. Additionally, Alunorte is exploring legal remedies to protect its contractual rights and interests.
