ICC warns of 80% grain price surge from Hormuz Strait disruptions
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has raised concerns about potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that prolonged issues could significantly impact global food security. The ICC reports that such disruptions could drive up grain and fertilizer prices, with grain prices potentially surging by as much as 80%. The increased costs of fertilizer could also raise agricultural production expenses, further straining food prices worldwide.
Nations heavily dependent on imported fertilizers are particularly at risk from these supply chain disruptions. The ICC also pointed to other threats to global agricultural production, including ongoing difficulties with Black Sea shipments due to the Russia-Ukraine war and adverse weather conditions linked to the El Niño phenomenon. These factors combined could exacerbate food supply challenges.
