ICE Introduces Precious Metals Futures in London's Massive Gold Market
The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the operator of the New York Stock Exchange, has launched new futures contracts for precious metals in London. These contracts are directly tied to the city's daily gold price auctions and cover gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. This move brings exchange-based trading to London's massive physical gold market, which handles around $190 billion in daily over-the-counter transactions and holds approximately $1.4 trillion in gold bullion in its vaults.
London's physical gold trading has long outpaced other global markets, yet it has lacked a major gold futures market for many years. Previous attempts, such as the London Gold Futures Market in 1982 and the London Metal Exchange's gold futures in 2017, both failed to sustain trading activity. ICE's latest initiative leverages its existing role in London's physical metals market, where it already operates the daily auctions that set benchmark prices for these precious metals.
The new ICE contracts provide market participants with an exchange-based way to trade precious metals price exposure directly from London. This development could potentially revive the futures trading landscape in the city, offering a more structured and regulated platform for trading precious metals.
