IEA Forecasts Record Global Coal Demand Amid LNG Disruptions

The International Energy Agency has revised its forecast for global coal demand upward, expecting a 1.2 percent increase to 8.94 billion tonnes by 2026.

This shift is primarily driven by LNG supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz and sharply higher gas prices.

LNG shipments account for a significant portion of Gulf exports that pass through the Strait, with only seven cargo transits recorded on September 10.

Consequently, several countries are ramping up coal-fired power generation to meet demand, particularly in China and India.
