IEA May Unleash More Oil Reserves as Brent Crude Surges Above $100

The International Energy Agency (IEA) may be forced to release more strategic oil reserves if Brent crude prices remain elevated, according to Senior Oil Market Analyst at Sparta Commodities June Goh.

Goh noted that the IEA had not yet exhausted the previously announced emergency release of 400 million barrels, which was made on March 11. She suggested that sustained higher oil prices could prompt another coordinated intervention by member countries.

As Brent crude has now crossed the $100 per barrel mark, several countries within the IEA framework still have room to contribute additional strategic reserves if required. Goh mentioned Japan and Korea as having 'a lot more' to spare, while the US still has some capacity although its caverns are getting 'a bit more dangerous'.

Goh also indicated that the threshold for another coordinated release could be sustained prices above $95 per barrel, which she believes is now the base case if oil prices continue above this level. She warned that disruptions to critical shipping routes could further tighten crude supplies and that supply-side risks remain a major concern in the market.
