Imperial Oil CEO John Whelan has spoken out against Alberta separatism, becoming one of the first major energy companies in the province to take a firm stance on the issue. At a recent Calgary conference, Whelan stated that as a national company, Imperial believes 'a united Canada is the strongest position we can take to face the challenges and opportunities ahead.'

Whelan emphasized the importance of free movement of people, products, energy, and investment across the country for Alberta's economic success. He also echoed the goal of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to double oil production in the province.

Imperial is one of the largest Canadian oilsands producers, operating the Kearl mine and Cold Lake in-situ well site. Whelan commended recent moves by the Alberta and Canadian governments to support production growth and create a favorable business environment.
