India Boosts LPG Output Amid Middle East Import Disruptions

India has taken measures to ensure domestic cooking-gas supplies after disruptions in Middle East imports hit its imports, which previously accounted for about 90% of its LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) needs.

The country has ordered refiners to maximize LPG output at 63,810 tonnes per day and strengthen storage and transport capacity. Reliance is assigned 18,000 tonnes/day, while ONGC, Oil India, and GAIL together are expected to provide 10% of the national target. The targets will be reviewed twice yearly.

This move is seen as a short-term energy-security intervention rather than a structural fix. Domestic refinery flexibility and logistics will constrain future gains. India's exposure to supply risks highlights the importance of diversifying suppliers, building larger strategic buffers, and accelerating the adoption of electrification and clean-cooking alternatives.
