Kenya's Shilling Holds Firm Below KSh130 Amid Strong Dollar Inflows
The Kenyan shilling has maintained its stability below KSh130 against the US dollar. The latest exchange rate published by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) on August 17, 2026, shows that the shilling traded at KSh129.34 per dollar, virtually unchanged from the previous week's position.
This stability comes despite continued pressure from international markets, where movements in the dollar, oil prices, and geopolitical developments can quickly affect currencies of import-dependent economies like Kenya.
The main factors supporting the shilling are Kenya's foreign-exchange reserve position and the steady flow of foreign currency into the economy. The CBK has maintained a sizeable foreign-currency buffer, giving it the capacity to meet the country's external payment obligations and smooth excessive volatility in the foreign-exchange market.
