India Boosts Vegetable Oil Imports Amid Autumn Holiday Season
India's vegetable oil imports surged by 34% in July to a 10-month high of 1.49 million tons, as the country replenished stocks ahead of its traditional autumn holiday season, market participants said.
The increase in imports was driven by higher demand for palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil, with palm oil imports reaching a five-month high of 733 thousand tons, up 50% from June, while soybean oil imports hit a seven-month high of 501 thousand tons, up 32%.
Processors began to actively replenish stocks after several months of sluggish purchases, according to Sunvin Group, and analysts at GGN Research predict that oil import rates will remain high in the coming months, with soybean oil purchases exceeding 500,000 tons in August and September due to its favorable price.
The increase in imports is a positive signal for the world's largest exporters of vegetable oils, Indonesia and Malaysia, as it will help them reduce palm oil stocks, while Argentina may see an increase in soybean oil exports, keeping palm and soybean oil prices high.
