India Eases Wheat Export Restrictions, Allowing for Additional Shipments
India has relaxed restrictions on exports of selected wheat and wheat flour products, allowing for additional shipments while maintaining controls over key categories. This move comes after the government progressively increased permitted wheat export quantities this year as domestic supplies and production prospects improved.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Commerce Ministry, continues to list wheat under a restricted framework but has permitted specified quantities for export through separate authorisations. In February 2026, a notification allowed 2.5 million tonnes of wheat exports under specified tariff classifications, while subsequent government decisions expanded the permitted quantity.
The latest policy adjustment is significant because India imposed restrictions on wheat exports in May 2022 following concerns over domestic availability and food prices. Rather than removing the restriction entirely, the government has used quotas and specific exemptions to control the pace of shipments.
