India Expands 5 Kg LPG Availability Without Address Proof Amid Supply Measures
The Indian government is taking proactive steps to ensure uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and LPG amid evolving tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a public advisory urging citizens to avoid panic purchases of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and to rely only on official sources for accurate information.
To manage the current situation, the government has enhanced refinery production and increased the booking interval for LPG cylinders. Citizens are encouraged to use digital modes for booking LPG and consider alternate fuels like PNG, induction, and electric cooktops. The Ministry of Coal has also increased coal distribution to ease pressure on LPG demand.
For migrant workers, the government has clarified that there is no disruption in LPG supply, and states may manage targeted distribution of 5 kg FTL LPG cylinders based on local requirements. Since March 23, 2026, over 6.6 lakh 5 kg FTL cylinders have been sold, and these can be purchased with any valid ID proof, without the need for address proof.
The government has directed states to prioritize LPG distribution, especially for domestic and essential needs, and to maintain vigilance against hoarding, diversion, and misinformation. States have been advised to set up control rooms, conduct regular press briefings, and intensify enforcement drives to curb black marketing.
