India Flags Off First LNG-Powered Train, Aims for Cleaner Rail Transport

India has made history by introducing its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered train, which was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on September 27, 2026. The train uses a dual-fuel system that allows LNG to partially replace conventional diesel fuel.

The initiative aims to reduce diesel consumption, fuel costs, and emissions in railway operations while promoting alternative fuels. The dual-fuel system replaces around 40% of diesel consumption with LNG, reducing the quantity of diesel required while retaining the operational capability of the existing diesel engine.

According to experts, the introduction of LNG trains can help reduce diesel consumption, fuel costs, and emissions in railway transportation. It also promotes the use of natural gas as an alternative transport fuel, diversifying the railway sector's energy mix. However, it is essential to note that LNG is still a fossil fuel, so its use should be balanced with rapid expansion of renewable energy and electrification.
