India Gold Market Sees Sharp Widening of Discounts Amid Duty Cut Speculation
India's gold market is experiencing a sharp widening of discounts as buyers await clarity on a potential cut in import duties. The government is discussing a possible reduction in duties, which could lower the landed cost of gold overnight.
According to Moneycontrol, the current 15% import duty has been a major factor contributing to the widening discount, with domestic gold trading at a significant premium to global prices.
Bhavik Patel, senior commodity analyst at Tradebulls Securities, believes that the wait-and-see approach among physical buyers is driving the sharp divergence between Indian and global prices. He expects continued selling pressure and discounting until there is clarity on the government's decision.
The current discount of 2-2.5% to the landed price has widened by another 1-1.5 percentage points, with Indian gold trading significantly below the import-parity price. This means that dealers are facing greater pressure to offer discounts while physical buyers hold back purchases until there is more clarity on the government's decision.
Analysts expect a rapid repricing of the domestic market if a duty cut is announced, but if the government does not announce a cut, the discount could gradually return towards the mid-2% range.
