India Hikes Wheat MSP by ₹25 to ₹2,610 Per Quintal
The Indian government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat by ₹25 to ₹2,610 per quintal. This hike is effective for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year and applies to a total of six crops: wheat, gram, masur, mustard, barley, and safflower.
The Centre's decision aims to ensure remunerative prices for farmers and encourage crop diversification nationwide. The MSP increase will provide a margin of at least 50% over production costs, with the actual margin standing much higher at 106% for wheat.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that the government ensures a minimum margin of 50%, but in reality, farmers receive a significantly higher margin. For example, mustard farmers will get a 96% margin, while lentil farmers will receive a 92% margin.
The total farmer payout for the 2027-28 procurement is estimated to be ₹90,962 crore, covering 324 lakh tonnes of produce. The MSP hike is seen as a positive step towards incentivizing crop diversification and ensuring food security nationwide.
