India Insulates Itself from Global Oil Supply Disruptions
India's energy security remains a top priority as the country navigates disruptions in crude oil and natural gas supplies due to conflicts in West Asia, particularly those affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized that India has successfully insulated itself from these global supply chain disruptions, ensuring no shortage of energy in the country.
Puri pointed out that despite international challenges, India's energy situation is stable due to government measures. The minister attributed this stability to the diversification of crude sourcing network to 41 countries, up from the previous 27. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on any single region, particularly with significant suppliers such as Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia located near conflict zones.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), citing rising domestic connections which grew from 140 million in 2014 to 335 million by 2026. To manage this demand, daily domestic LPG production has increased from 34,000 metric tonnes to 54,000.
Puri encouraged a move towards alternative energy sources and hinted at a shift towards renewables. The government's goal is to ensure energy availability and affordability for the growing Indian economy, which requires substantial energy resources. India's energy requirements are currently three times the global average, driven by robust economic activity, and fluctuations in energy management could significantly impact the broader economy.
