India Lifts Export Curbs on Wheat Products Amid Rising Domestic Production

The Indian government has lifted export restrictions on several wheat products, including atta, maida, and semolina. According to a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), these products have been shifted from the prohibited to the free category.

This decision comes after the Centre imposed curbs on wheat and wheat product exports in 2022 to ensure domestic food security and contain rising prices. The export policy for wheat was changed from free to prohibited on May 13, 2022, amid disruptions in global wheat supplies following the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The government allowed the export of 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat and an additional 5 LMT of wheat products in February this year. India's total foodgrain production increased by 5.3 per cent to a record high of 376.563 million tonnes in 2025-26.
