India Lifts Four-Year Wheat Export Ban, Opens Overseas Markets
The Indian government has lifted its four-year ban on wheat exports, allowing domestic millers and exporters to ship wheat flour and related products overseas without restrictions. The move comes after several years of controls aimed at protecting domestic supplies and containing food inflation.
The ban was imposed in July 2022 following a sharp increase in domestic prices of wheat and atta due to global supply disruptions and logistical challenges caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The government had earlier allowed exports subject to an annual limit of 5 million tonnes, but this restriction has now been removed. Exporters can now ship these products overseas without any ceilings or restrictions.
